De onderzoeksgroep Premières Traces et Evolution de la Vie - Astrobiologie verricht onderzoek naar de evolutie van de vroege biosfeer in mariene milieus met de nadruk op de thema's paleobiogeologie (de studie van het ontstaan en de evolutie van het leven, de evolutie van de interacties tussen de biosfeer en de geosfeer in het Precambrium) en de astrobiologie (biosignaturen en bewoonbaarheid).
De onderzoeksgroep bestudeert de volgende mariene thema's:
- evolutie van de Precambrische biosfeer (4 tot 0,5 miljard jaar geleden) gekoppeld aan veranderingen in het milieu (redoxcondities, glaciaties, tektoniek, beschikbaarheid van nutriënten, etc.);
- oorsprong, evolutie, paleobiologie en paleo-ecologie van Precambrische eukaryoten en diversificatie van prokaryoten, in het bijzonder cyanobacteriën;
- analyses van fossilisatieprocessen en determinatie van de biologische affiniteit van microfossielen op macro- tot nanoschaal;
- geobiologie: microbiële matten in siliciclastische gesteenten van recente extreme milieus (Antarctica) tot het Precambrium (prokaryoten en protisten) en de bewaring van biosignaturen (diagenese en metamorfose);
- karakterisering van biosignaturen voor paleobiologie en astrobiologie.
